The Opportunity

GV is experiencing unprecedented growth after publicly launching the Thrive Capital Campaign, which aims to raise $6.3M for the construction of a Perishable Food Rescue Centre—our most significant expansion in 40 years. We are seeking a collaborative, entrepreneurial, and passionate Director of Development and Communications to lead our team into this exciting new phase. The ideal candidate will be a creative thinker with a proven ability to turn innovative ideas into successful strategies, ensuring GV’s continued growth and success.

Reporting to the CEO, the Director of Development & Communications will work to enhance relationships with our growing community of donors, supporters, and advocates, and reinforce our leadership position in the Atlantic Canadian food security landscape. As a member of the senior management team, the Director of Development and Communications will drive all aspects of our revenue development and communications strategies.

This position offers an exciting opportunity to significantly influence and direct a new phase for GV during an important period of growth both for our organization and the broader community. The ideal candidate will use their experience in non-profit fundraising and communications to lead and inspire a team of two direct reports and collaborate with staff and volunteers to increase support and raise awareness for GV.

Core Responsibilities

Fundraising and Communications Programs Oversight and Management

  • Support the work of the CEO, Campaign Cabinet, and campaign consultant to close the Thrive Campaign. This includes maintaining a strong overview of campaign activities such as moves management, goal progress, solicitor activities, and staff team workload
  • Collaborate with senior leadership and the Board of Directors to develop and implement a comprehensive fundraising strategy across various revenue channels, including annual and monthly donations, major gifts, and community giving
  • Collaborate with the Marketing Coordinator to develop all strategic communications, including digital platforms, donor communications, direct response, and marketing initiatives.
  • Plan and organize fundraising programs and initiatives, including annual campaigns, monthly giving major giving and community giving
  • Ensure consistent, high-quality messaging and communication to donors, volunteers, and other stakeholders
  • Oversee all aspects of event planning, including budgeting, logistics, vendor management, and attendee engagement
  • Provide leadership and management for the activities of the Marketing Coordinator and Volunteer & Development Coordinator
  • Regularly prepare and present detailed fundraising reports and analyses to the CEO and the Board of Directors
  • Ensure the execution of donor stewardship and care including recognition, naming opportunities, long-term engagement opportunities and thanking

Donor Cultivation and Relationship Management

  • Identify, cultivate, and steward relationships with major donors, corporations, foundations, and other potential funding sources through personalized and meaningful interactions
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, including Board members, volunteers, and community leaders, to foster a culture of philanthropy and prospecting
  • Design and implement effective stewardship strategies to ensure ongoing engagement and recognition of donors

Partnership Development

  • Develop new partnerships and/or sponsorships to help fund GV
  • Maintain and deepen existing relationships with the GV’s network of partners and sponsors
  • Research and prepare grant applications to government agencies, foundations, and other granting agencies

Data Management

  • Optimize, administer, and maintain the current donor CRM, including donor segmentation and stewardship
  • Produce reports on the progress of the GV’s activities and accomplishments

Skills and Qualifications

  • A passion for GV’s mission and work
  • Five (5) years’ relevant experience in a management role raising funds and awareness in the non-profit sector
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build and maintain strong relationships with diverse stakeholders
  • Post-Secondary Education
  • Adept at communicating effectively and passionately with a diverse range of internal and external audiences
  • Comfortable in a fast-paced environment, balancing multiple priorities and multiple stakeholders
  • Ability to speak to large and small groups with confidence and enthusiasm to elicit engagement
  • Capital Campaign experience is considered a strong asset
  • Comprehension of prospect research methods, wealth-mining tools, and solicitation strategy development
  • Willingness to accept feedback and seek practical solutions to complex project management and relationship management challenges
  • Experience managing multiple projects and workloads
  • Skilled at managing human resources (paid and volunteer) toward specific goals
  • Proficiency in required software, including Microsoft Office 365, donor management CRM systems such as Raisers Edge, and event management tools
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment
  • Flexibility to work occasional evenings and weekends, as required for donor events or meetings
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English (ability to communicate in French is an asset)
  • Thorough knowledge of Canadian charity regulations and the responsibilities of a non-profit organization
