About the Food for Thought Event

About the Food for Thought Event

New Brunswick faces a critical food crisis: 22.7% of families struggle to put food on the table, turning to local food banks like Greener Village for help. Since 1983, Greener Village has been a lifeline, providing food, clothing, and opportunities for self-sufficiency.

Demand has surged by 70% in recent years, and we are now distributing 125,000 meals through 2,000 grocery boxes monthly, with 33% going to children. All while each year, 457 million pounds of food are wasted in Atlantic Canada, emitting 21 million tonnes of greenhouse gases.

In response, Greener Village is building Atlantic Canada’s first Perishable Food Rescue Centre, reclaiming food and revolutionizing food security. By partnering with Food Banks Canada and Food Depot Alimentaire, we’ll redistribute $4M in fresh food to over 70 food focused charities across New Brunswick.

To celebrate and bring awareness to our transformational project, we are excited to be hosting our first-ever major event, the Food for Thought Luncheon: A Candid Talk on Food Insecurity with Michael McCain and Blair Hyslop, held at the beautiful Kingswood Lodge on May 8th, 2024 from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm.

The Food for Thought Luncheon will bring together 150 esteemed guests, including dignitaries, influential business and industry leaders, and passionate food security advocates from across New Brunswick, to engage in a meaningful dialogue about the critical issue of food security in our province

Executive Chairman of the Board, Maple Leaf Foods and Honourary Chairman, Maple Leaf Centre for Food Security

Michael H. McCain is Executive Chairman of the Board of Maple Leaf Foods, an iconic Canadian company with a bold vision to be the most sustainable protein company on Earth. Michael has devoted his career to the food industry, starting at McCain Foods in the late 1970s, where he held various roles, including President and Chief Executive Officer of McCain Foods USA.

He joined Maple Leaf Foods in 1995 and became Chief Executive Officer of the company in 1998, a position he held until May 2023. Michael has been instrumental in establishing Maple Leaf Foods as a sustainable, purpose-driven company with world-class assets, market-leading brands, and a remarkably talented team grounded in the company’s foundational culture and Leadership Values.

Michael is also a vocal proponent of sustainable food production. Under his leadership, Maple Leaf Foods became the world’s first major carbon-neutral food company and the first food company in Canada to set globally respected science-based targets.

Fueled by his belief that everyone in Canada should have enough to eat, Michael led the establishment of the Maple Leaf Centre for Food Security, a non-profit organization dedicated to making a meaningful difference in addressing food insecurity in Canada through action, advocacy, and partnerships.

He is currently volunteering as the Chair of Greener Village’s Thrive Campaign to build Atlantic Canada’s first-ever Perishable Food Rescue Centre.
